“There’s nothing wrong with me. I feel fine” (4) is the last line of words in Ernest Hemingway’s four-page short story “Hills Like White Elephants.” However, to get there, first, you must analyze what literary methods he uses to create the story. Two of the most discussed features of the story revolve around the setting in which the dialogue takes place, being the train station “. . . between two lines of rails . . .” (Hemingway 1), and the dialogue itself. However, what many readers do not notice is Hemingway’s effective use of repetition and gendered language throughout the story to fuel the conflict-driven plot and create meaning from the meaningless.
